Business – FAQs

What is the SA Retailer Energy Efficiency Scheme (REES)?

The Retailer Energy Efficiency Scheme (REES) is a South Australian Government scheme that provides incentives for South Australian households and businesses to save energy. It achieves this by requiring electricity and gas retailers to establish energy efficiency and audit targets.

Who administers REES?

The Essential Services Commission of South Australia administers REES. The Minister for Energy and Mining sets the overall policy framework for REES. More information is available on their website: http://www.escosa.sa.gov.au/residential-energy-efficiency-scheme-rees/rees-energy-efficiency-activities.aspx

Am I a large energy user?

If your site (NMI) consumes over 160 MWh of electricity per year — or monthly bills of about $4,000 — you may be considered a large energy user. Our partner, Trades Services SA, who we’ve contracted our energy efficiency activities to, will be able to tell from your electricity bill once you submit it with your application form.

Am I eligible for REES?

REES activities are available for eligible South Australian households and businesses where the same REES activities have not been undertaken before. Please submit the online application form and a member of our team will get back to you with info about your eligibility.

Are there additional requirements for large energy customers?

REES requires large energy customers to contribute a minimum of $1.40 (incl. GST) per GJ saved by the upgrade. Small business customers aren’t required to pay this mandatory charge.

How do I access the scheme?

You can contact Trades Services SA on 1300 430 917, email rees@tssa.com.au or complete the online application form.

How much energy will I save?

This depends on the type and number of lights being replaced. For instance, if replacing fluorescent tubes with LED tubes, the energy savings per tube is ~ 21W (36W replaced with 15W). Old metal halide highbays typically use ~400 – 450W. These are replaced with ~110 – 120W LED highbays, saving significant electricity per light. As all installations are compliant with AS/NZS 1680, there is no loss of lumination; it may even be improved.

Is there a number that I can call to speak to someone?

Please call 1300 430 917 between 9–5 pm Monday to Friday to speak to the experienced staff

What are the REES energy efficiency activities available?

The installer will provide high-bay, downlight, flood light, shop light and fluorescent tube replacements, up to 900 GJ equivalent per NMI/site. To see if you are eligible, please fill-in the application for and we will contact you.

What do I do if I have a problem with a REES installation?

Contact our friendly customer service team on 1300 430 917 or email rees@tssa.com.au, explain the issue, installation date and address and we will make an assessment of your claim and contact you (if required) to arrange the repair or replacement.

What is a commercial lighting upgrade?

A commercial lighting upgrade involves replacing high pressure sodium, metal halide, fluorescent, halogen and/or incandescent globes with LED.

What is a gigajoule?

Under REES, the annual energy efficiency targets and the savings per upgrade are expressed in normalised gigajoules (GJ) of energy. For commercial lighting, the easy way to calculate the GJ saved is to multiply the MWh by 3.6. The TSSA specialist will calculate your energy savings when they visit your site for an obligation-free quote.

What is excluded?

New installations which don’t involve replacing existing, working lights aren’t eligible for REES benefits and will be charged at market rates. Any additional parts or materials, electrical switchboard work or upgrades and/or scissor lift hire may also incur an additional cost, depending on the site and the size of the job.
